To see lions in their natural surroundings was on my
bucket list. This male had been hunting all night for “Strainers” –
joking … we took this picture at about 5:30 a.m. He has a full
stomach. His mate was just up the path — three feet away. The lion
population in South Africa, as reported to me, has declined over
the last 30 years from 200,000 to approximately 18,000 to 20,000!
Protected parks keep their survival. A lion will live to be about
15 to 17 years old in the wild. I found it interesting that in a
protected environment a lion will live to twice the age, almost 30.
